Self-reflections

Page overview:

On this page, you will find self-reflections that I wrote about the lessons that I taught during my teaching practice.

Lesson: Family
Lesson Reflection
Gibb's Reflective Cycle
Description

Reflecting on this lesson, I realized that I should be establishing and  reinforcing rules for students to follow, as many were speaking without permisison.

Lesson: Sports
Lesson Reflection
Gibb's Reflective Cycle
Description

After implementing group work tasks during this lesson, I noticed that I did not properly explain how the task should be done, and so students did not participate actively, and were hesitant to engage with the activity. Modeling is especially important during online learning.

Lesson: Omar Abdulrahman
Lesson Reflection
Gibb's Reflective Cycle
Description

When introducing and explaining the lesson, I noticed that I would focus on asking the students who participate more. However, students who are mostly inactive did not get many chances to engage with the lesson. Therefore, I concluded that I must create a list of participation rules that push students to be more active.

Lesson: Feelings
Lesson Reflection
Gibb's Reflective Cycle
Description

During this lesson, I had a tough time dealing with sudden problems that arised such as students being unable to access the websites to do the main activities. Consequently, many of the students' time was wasted waiting for me to solve the problem for them. I concluded that I should create extra activities for when technical difficulties arise, and give students different tasks to do while waiting.

Lesson: Favourite Things
Lesson Reflection
Gibb's Reflective Cycle
Description

Reflecting on this lesson, I viewed that certain students were not being active and joining links when told to do so. Thus, I planned to continue reinforcing rules.

The UAE Desert
Lesson: The UAE Desert
Lesson Reflection
Description

During this lesson, I reflected on how it was difficult to monitor learners who are not participating and therefore I couldn't tell whether they had achieved the learning outcomes.

Gibb's Reflective Cycle
Description

Using Gibb's reflective cycle, I recognized that I must have a tool that helps me monitor students who are workng and those who aren't. Thus, I concluded that I must have an observation checklist to target those who don't participate.

Rationale

After using the checklist, I was able to target the students who were not able to achieve the outcomes due to not participating, or struggling with certain parts of the lesson. Therefore, I used that to plan for instruction, in which the following lesson reinforced the concept for struggling students.

Desert Animals
Lesson: Desert Animals
Lesson Reflection
Description

For this lesson, I observed that my modeling skills were not sufficient, and so learners were confused when the main activities started.

Gibb's Reflective Cycle
Description

Using Gibb's reflective cycle, I concluded that I need to model each aspect of the activity explicitly, and share a sample with students for them to know what the outcome should look like.

Rationale

During the following lesson, I showed students samples of how their work should look like and what exact steps they should follow. Then, they were able to perform better. I learned that explicit instruction is really important.

Lesson: Ghaf Tree
Lesson Reflection
Gibb's Reflective Cycle
Description

During this lesson, many students finished the main activities earlier than planned, and they did not have any other tasks to partake in. Therefore, I decided that the following lessons will make use of extra activities for early-finishers so that they can further extend their knowledge on the topic.

Lesson: Weather
Lesson Reflection
Gibb's Reflective Cycle
Description

In order to reduce my talking time as a part of my Professional Development Plan (PDP), I would have liked to hold more discussions with students during this lesson. Therefore, I decided that I will be creating a list of questions and ensuring that students engage in meaningful discussions

Lesson: Favourite Animals
Lesson Reflection
Gibb's Reflective Cycle
Description

Writing this reflection helped me conclude that low achievers need explicit modeling as they were not being very active and it could be due to them struggling with the tasks. Thus, I planned to share my screen and work on the activity with them as they perform the task following my steps.

Lesson: Yes or No Questions
Lesson Reflection
Gibb's Reflective Cycle
Description

This lesson was implemented without the use of a specific assessment tool, and it made it difficult to check for students' progress. Therefore, I decided I would be searching for various assessment tools that help me follow up with learners.
