16/2/2020-19/2/2020

I taught two official lessons this week, and I had the opportunity to introduce some rules for my Professional Development Plan (PDP) goal after discussing them with my Mentor at the school, which is about voice levels in the classroom. I taught students about using hand signals to indicate their need for the bathroom, water, answering a question or asking something. At the beginning of the week, I showed students the hand signal posters and modelled it for them, while having them imitate my movements. I continued using this strategy with them throughout the week. A few days later on Wednesday, I showed students the voice level chart I created. The charts include levels of voice (0-4) ranging from silent to presenting voice. I hung the charts on the board, with a small light next to each chart. I modelled for students how each chart will have a light next to it, and when a particular light is on, they must see which voice-level that refers to. The particular lesson I taught with this strategy had an activity that involved pair work. I was glad to see students responding well to my signals. I was worried that too many rules and strategies would be too overwhelming, but I think spacing out the introduction of each rule and giving students enough time to practice the rules leads to a successful implementation.
