Explicitly transitioning between one activity to the next has been a goal of mine, and it is something I wanted to implement successfully. That’s why this semester, one of my three Professional Development Goals (PDP) is to use transitioning techniques during the lesson. I have created three transition sticks that I present to students before an activity, right before it ends, and once it is time to clean up. When I’m modelling for an activity, I use the first transition stick that instructs students to “look and listen”. I use the second transition stick to let students know that time is almost up, and the last transition stick is to instruct students to clean up and end an activity. I introduced these instructions to students this week and have consistently used them when teaching. Since the students are not used to following a specific routine during the lesson time, nor are they accustomed to listening to specific instructions; it was difficult for them to continue to adhere to my instructions. The first time I introduced the technique, students did well. However, the second time was not as successful, because they were too busy working when I said it was time to clean up. So, it will take some time for the students to comply with what I tell them to do.
